Echolocalizator (2015) is a wearable device that aims to change or augment our human way of interacting with the environment. Using “sound spatialization,” this technological helmet simulates the echolocation sonar used by animals like bats and dolphins, highlighting the essential role of technology in the coevolution of humans and animals.
Echolocalizator is, in fact, a perception-bending, environment-transforming portal to a world that simultaneously exists and does not exist. The work proposes a “virtualized reality” where visible phenomena are reinterpreted into synthesized sounds that generate new cognitive associations and perceptive experiences.
The helmet is a cybernetic hybrid computer that recreates physical reality within a biofeedback system and executes a computer algorithm in real time, translating sensory stimuli into a new language for human interpretation. Using ultrasonic sensors placed to the left and right of the forehead and a microcontroller that translates incoming signals into centimeters, this leather wearable device is able to produce a binaural sound atmosphere created in the mind of the user with sounds that correspond to their movements and the positions of objects in their vicinity.
Echolocalizator was a collaborative effort that began in 2015 at the Festival de la Imagen in Manizales, Colombia, and continued in the design laboratories of the University of Caldas.
Art Gallery Siggraph 2017. Los Angeles, EEUU
SIGGRAPH is the world’s largest, most influential annual conference and exhibition in computer graphics and interactive techniques. In 2017, the Siggraph Art Gallery , called Unsettled Artifacts: Technological Speculations from Latin America (curated by Paula Gaetano Adi), presented a series of works by Latin American artists whose works reopen the possibility of artifacts that explore other uses around technology. These artist practices are beyond the traditional centers of industrial and technological development, and offering looks with a territorial component marked in the results and the ways of approaching the technological milestone from unstable, rebel, critic artifacts.
As a special issue of Leonardo, The Journal of the International Society of the Arts, Sciences and Technology includes visual documentation and articles about the works exhibited in the Art Gallery of 2017 were included.
Festival Internacional de la Imagen. Manizales Colombia.
Residencia Diseño+Creación/Design+Creation’s Residency. 2015
Since 1997 the International Festival of the Image has been a meeting point for artists, researchers, universities and institutions in the line of digital culture, design, art, science and technology, offering a multidisciplinary space and reflection with exhibitions, conferences, concerts , meetings and academic forums. In its latest editions, the festival offers a production grant based on its annual residence program Design + Creation. In 2015, the proposal chosen by the jury was the «echolocalizator» for which I spent a month in the city of Manizales performing this project in the facilities of the Visual Design Department of the University of Caldas. Where I had the help of the team of the Festival and also students, teachers and researchers who accompanied with ideas, advice, training and work in the realization of this project.
